WEEK 12: Illini

Hello again Hawkeye friends, sorry for the two week break, was moving my place and had the writing gear all packed up.  But in the new place now and we are back.

And so were the Hawks.  Sorry Illinois, best of luck next year on being bowl eligible.  HA!

So the Hawks found their offensive and defensive footing, and just in time for the last trophy game of the season.  Hello again, Huskers.

WEEK 9: Nittany Lions

Well, that was certainly a very disappointing loss, one that had the Iowa offense played just a bit better, we would have won.

In light of what was on the line (the Badgers had lost to the Mildcats before Iowa kicked off, had we won, the lead in the Big Ten West), that was the worse game of Nate’s career.  He was just 18 out of 49, for 205 yards, with no TDs, and 2 critical interceptions.  The second one, with just over 3 minutes left, Iowa with a 1st and goal at the PSU 3 yard line, Nate tried to change the play, but with the PSU student section at that end of the field, its seemed the outer Iowa players did not hear him.  Kirk was running onto the field trying to call time out, but the officials missed it, Nate snapped the ball, and quickly floated it to the left side of the line, but Fant did not turn around, and the pass fell into the arms of PSU defender.  Iowa would get the ball back with under a minute left, but could not even get a Hail Mary off at the end of the game.

WEEK 8: Terrapins

Well, when we wrote that the Iowa defense was going to make things hard on Maryland, even we did not think it would be that bad!  Or good!

When the starting defense departed about midway through the 4th, the Maryland offense had just 90 net yards - total.  They would end the game with 115 total yards, a total shutdown by the Iowa defense.

Hooker would snag the one interception that Iowa would get on the day, and Nelson (Anthony) was the recipient of the gift TD for the Iowa defense, when Maryland botched the handoff deep in their own territory, only to see their QB kick the ball into the end zone as he was hit, which allowed Nelson to fall on it, and that TD pretty much let everyone know the game was over.

WEEK 7: Hoosiers

Well teams might want to quit scheduling the Hawks for the homecoming games!  Back to back road wins, back to back sad Homecoming fans.

When we wrote that Indiana had not faced any good tight ends in practice, we did not quite think the Iowa tight ends would slice and dice the Hoosier defense as they did.  Fant, 4 for 102, with a long of 58, and 1 TD, and Hockenson 4 for for 197, a long a 58, and 2 TDS.  Of those 8 tight end catches, 3 touchdowns (to outscore Indiana), and the other 5 catches netted Hawkeye 1st downs.  Feel free to keep that up boys.

Those were just (just) half of the passing TDs that Nate would have on the day.

WEEK 6: Rodents

Ah yes, Floyd is resting the the comfortable climate of Iowa City and not the frozen tundra of the Twin Cities, for the 4th year in a row.  Hawks in the process of claiming the Rodents outdoor stadium as Kinnick North - Outdoor.  Rest easy for 12 months Floyd.

As Saturday morning turned to afternoon, a rather alarming update came from the Iowa media - the Hawks would be starting two true freshman in the secondary (Ojemudia and Hankins had been dinged up, were in uniform, but held out one more week), as Moss #33, a 6’0 195 freshman out of Ankeny, and Brents, #20, a 6’2, 180 freshman out of Indianapolis, would be starting at both corner spots.  The last time the Hawks started two freshman in the secondary?  2000.  They, Benny Sapp, and some guy named Bob Sanders.
