That, is something I have never typed on a computer before! The last time, October 1988. Let's take at look at where the Sedge was at that time.
10 weeks or so into my senior year at Ames High School, where I had known since the first day of school that I would be heading to Iowa City the following August (snail mailed the application to Iowa in late May, got the response that I was in the 1st day of school that August). Suffice to say, my senior itus started early, so eager to get out of my hometown and start the chapter of my 'adult' life.
Teams loved in October 1988.
The Dodgers, obviously, had been a fan since age 6. Had loved the 1981 series win, and here we were again. All the time, I thought. Heh.
The Dallas Cowboys. Will always remember wearing that Cowboys winter hat around my freshman year at Iowa, when the Boys had been 1-15. Took so much crap. The next year they drafted Emmitt Smith, and went on to win 3 Super Bowls in 5 years.
No, I was not yet a Washington Capitals fan - that did not come until 1992, when living with the 6 other guys in that house in Iowa City, our combined 5 SEGAs, and the very first EA Sports NHL game for SEGA. Took the Caps when my roommates wanted the other power teams of the early 90s, that is how I got to know the players, and within 5 years, obsessed. At this moment, listening to Caps Radio, as they take on the Wings from Little Caesars Arena . Ugh, and they just fell behind 3-2 - a Wings power play goal.
NBA, not really a fan of it while on high school, once the 1990s came around and with BJ Armstrong raining 3s with Jordan and the Bulls, that was my team, BJ there for the first 3 Bulls titles. Once Jordan left the Bulls for good (after returning from playing baseball) I kind of drifted away from the NBA, and haven't really been back. But if some more Hawks start getting drafted, I could return.
TEAM USA - of course. I'm from Iowa.
And then, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Yes, grew up in Ames. Probably liked the Clowns more as a kid, but by the time I was a teenager, my allegiance had shifted. I will always be grateful for my grandpa and grandma Harold and Evelyn Hegland, who met as students at the State University of Iowa in the mid 1930s. As a child I heard them listen to Zabel on WHO radio, and saw them watching the Hawks on tv wherever they could, in central Iowa in the 1970s. Somewhere that planted a seed in me, and now I have the Black and Gold ink on my right arm for the rest of my life. And glad to have it!
So that World Series in 1988 came around after the Dodgers somehow got past the Mets - and then had the face the vaunted A's. I was confident though, if Orel Hershiser could pitch 3 games, the Dodgers just had to find one win from someone else. Of course Orel had just completed his MLB recored 59 scoreless innings, so that did seem like a good path to a Dodgers victory.
But of course, Kirk Gibson stunned the A's when he could barely walk to the plate, and the Dodgers would win the series in 5 games. I woke up my little brothers with the screams of joy coming from the living room. Sorry Mark and Jon.
Oshie!!!! A Caps Power Play goal with 61 seconds left, Caps 3 Wings 3!!!
To OT we go in Detroit.
So back to the 2017 World Series. A quick check and the Astros have jumped ahead of the Yankees 3-0 in the 5th. If that holds, Game 7. Don't really care who the Dodgers will face, but can't ignore the history of a Dodgers Yankees World Series.
Oh, and the World Series Game 4 is scheduled for 8:00 pm (eastern) next Saturday night (Game 1, Tuesday). Iowa and the Golden Rodents kick off at 6:30 pm (eastern) next Saturday night. So I will be needing that little tv by my DJ booth to be on the World Series game, while all the rest of the tvs in the bar will be on the Hawks/Rodents game. I'm a sports watching professional, I'm sure I can manage both a World Series game and a Hawkeye football game.
OVI!!!! A power play OT game winning goal!!! Final: Capitals 4 Wings 3! Way to go Caps!!!
Like I said, I can multi task!
Soon wrapping it up for the night, have to be up early, to the bar by 10:00 am to get the balloons set up, and my DJ gear set up for the noon kickoff. Hawks - Mildcats. Please Hawks, make it Hayden Worthy.
It's a great time of year to be a sports fan. With my Dodgers in the World Series, it's even better than normal. Signing off from The Eternal Season for the night. Enjoy your weekend!
