WEEK 11: Badgers

Well, that was one for the ages all right.  That is, the 66 net yards the offense got, the worst single game in the 19 years of the Ferentz era.

While the defense was tossing in two more pick-sixes (both by Jackson, again one of your national Defensive Players of the Week), the Iowa offense tossed in 3 turnovers and at least 6 drops, basically the complete opposite of what they did against Ohio State.

WEEK 10: Buckeyes

First, enjoy every play of this game without any commercials or the halftime break!

While we here at Sedge’s Game Notes thought the Hawks could indeed beat Ohio State, it was more along the lines of a last second field goal or td, not a woodshed pile driving beat down that is was.  And it was glorious!

That leaves the Hawks bowl eligible (again), confirms that indeed, Iowa teams can hit full stride come November, and has the Badgers on notice as the Hawks head east this weekend.

But more about the Badgers later.

Let’s lead off with the Iowa offense this week.  Against what many consider a mini NFL front, the Iowa O line gave up one single sack, and that on a play where Nate kind of stepped forward, probably wanting to run the ball, but got tripped up.  A huge effort by the O line that propelled the entire Iowa offense.

Nate, 20 for 31, for 226 yards, with 5! td passes, and no turnovers.  He now has 22 td passes on the season, 5 short of Chuck Long’s school record 27.  This would be a  good week to tie the record Nate.  Oh,  and Nate also had a 47 yard pooch punt, but it should have been about 43, which would have pinned OSU inside their 3 yard line.  Nate is your Big 10 Offensive Player of the Week.

WEEK 9: Golden Rodents

Welcome home Floyd!  Two trophy games up, two trophy games won.  Just wish this one had been by more points.  Shut up the Rodents for another year.

Let’s lead off with the Iowa defense this week.  Another game where they played well enough to win, and win we did.  They held Rodent QB Croft (who did play the whole game) to just 9 of 29 throws, for 129 yards, and the 1 interception.  By my count, Josh Jackson had 5 pass breakups himself, along with 3 tackles, to be the star of the defensive unit.

The Rodents did get to 142 on the ground, but it clearly was not enough to help their passing attack.

WEEK 8: Mildcats

Another week, another gut check loss, with plenty of blame to go around. Well, not the defense, though missing The Outlaw played a role in the Mildcats scoring the OT touchdown.  Still, for both him and Snyder out for this game, 10 points in regulation, the defense did all they could do to win the game.

Wadley hit 90 yards, but that was on 26 carries - and too often, Iowa called running plays for him right into the line, and those plays almost never went for more than a yard or two.  By comparison Young just 2 carries for 4 yards, and the same for IS-M.  Wadley had 3 catches for 5 yards, but against a defense that is clearly selling out to stop the run, we needed to get him many more plays in space, and not straight into the line.

Which takes us to the O line - due to injuries we are playing Jackson (redshirt freshman and Wirfs - a true freshman).  That is probably the main reason the line is not generating the holes like we are used to for an Iowa O line.  But now that these young guys have a few games under the belt, let’s hope that the running game can get going this week.
