Once again, the Hawks were able to emerge from the ashes of a loss to put a beat down on the next team they played.  It’s really too bad we dropped the Michigan State and Ohio State games, as you note the standings above, we would be in a first place tie.

The Hawks needed to start fast on Saturday, and Marble Junior, clearly not pleased with his slow to non existent first halves of late, exploded out of the gate, draining 6 threes, while on the way to 22 first half points.  The Hawks would shoot 10-17 from three, one game after going just 3 of 20 against Ohio State.

Marble was not all there was, as the Hawks found both the inside and outside game to put Michigan in a 43-29 hole at halftime.  I think we all expected Michigan to make a serious run in the second half, but the only real question turned out to be if we were going to hang a 30 point loss on them or not.  In the end, 85-67, in fact the worst loss the Wolverines have had yet this season.

This week, Woody gets the GIF honors:

Marble ended up with 26 points, and he also drew primarily defensive assignment on Stauskas - who only managed 10 points.  A great offensive and defensive effort by the Hawkeyes.

And once again, the team looks like one that can make a deep run come tourney time.  If we are hitting the 3 pointers, it opens up the whole floor, and there is no one in the country that can match our depth at the pace we want to play at.  Now the Hawks must go back out on the road, but a road game that we have to get.

Because Penn State is 3-8 in conference, and 12-12 on the year.  Yes, road games in the B1G are never easy, but this is a game the Hawks must have.  It’s the only one this week, so they should be very well rested for this game, and the final sprint to the Big Ten Tournament.

And based on the current standings, Iowa can do no worse than 3rd this week no matter what happens, because everyone behind us in the Big Ten race has at least 5 losses already.  Keep winning, we can do no worse than 3rd.  Keep winning - maybe even better.

Go Hawks!!!
