Week 12 Recap: Michigan

Well friends, the football floor of the bandwagon is pretty empty now, but that’s ok, as the Iowa Hoops section might soon overflow and will be needing the space.

The Hawks hung in there for one quarter Saturday, coming right back to match Michigan at 7 all with James’ td pass to freshman tight end Henry Krieger Cole, heretofore HKC.

But early in the 2nd, Michigan was facing a 3rd and 17 from the Iowa 37 yard line.

And the play was the Iowa 2012 season in miniature.

Gardner had time, but then as he rolled to the near side, the Hawks cut him off, and he had to turn back to the far side of the field - all the while the line was chasing him, while downfield, the secondary could not stay with their receivers for what seemed like 13 seconds, and then Gardner fired the ball downfield and found a wide open Roundtree in the corner of the end zone. It was caught, the Hawks trailed 14-7.

Week 11 Recap: Purdue

The Fence.

Tis been about, 6 years since I had to use this.  I.E the last time it was pretty obvious our season was ending in November.

The back story.  Back in junior high and high school, my friends and I bowled quite often.  Way back in the day that this was, we didn’t have nifty auto scorecards as they do now - we had to do it manually.  After walking 3 miles uphill to the bowling alley.

From time to time, we would be in a rut - a few frames of 5, 3, 4.  To combat this, we would draw a fence on the scorecard between the last bad frame and the next, empty one.  Sometimes this would actually work.

And so, as the Hawkeyes have now gone a calendar month without a win, we get, a fence.

Week 12 Preview: Michigan

Michigan.  A team that we have topped 3 times in a row - a streak unequaled in the Iowa-Michigan history.  Three straight wins for us, that is.

Michigan, a team that probably thought they would cake walk their way to the B1G title game and beyond, even after they got thumped handily by Alabama to open the season.

Week 10 Recap: Indiana

Let’s start with the good news: as the disappointing football season winds down, (over in 3 weeks), the Iowa Basketball seasons are just starting to get underway.  And while the football team should be better in the years ahead, we are primed to see major improvement now in our basketball teams.  And that should take some of the pain from this football season away.

Of course, it was just a less than stellar football season.  If the seniors move on to more school or promising careers, then the student athlete model is not as broken as some would claim.

Once again, a game lost because of the contributions of the all.  Poor execution from the offense, down moments from the defense, and yes, coaching decisions that seemed to once again be made in the case of not losing, as opposed as playing to win.

Week 9 Recap: Northwestern

This week, with all that is going on outside us here in NYC, we have good reason to forget about this game and move on to the next.  And so, we are all once again spared the mind numbing details.  Watching this game live, I was finding it very hard to figure out who we could beat down the stretch.  Seeing it again would only confirm those feelings, I’m afraid.

Consider - a game where Iowa was 9 plus minutes in the time of possession, and plus 2 on the turnover battle, and was never really in it after the 9 minute point of the 3rd quarter.  Yet it happened.

A game where the Iowa defense gave up just 84 passing yards - but somehow, allowed 349 rushing yards.  Rushing yards that simply deflated the defense, and everyone else who was watching it happen.

The Cats went with no QB shuffle as Colter started, and played almost the entire game, racking up 166 rushing yards, including almost all the yards in the opening drive - when he converted 3rd and 6 and 3rd and 9 plays by escaping the Iowa D and running for 1st downs.

A bit later, the Hawkeye defense had Northwestern in a 3rd and 1 from our 5, but once again, Colter escaped and the Cats lead 7-0.

Week 8 Recap: Penn State

First, let’s start with the good news:  You often hear football coaches say that you can’t allow a football team to beat you twice.  That is, you have to flush it from your memory and move on.  And so, you don’t want to read about it, I don’t want to re-watch it - so the play by play takes a week off.

Second, as bad as that game was - it was not a Legends division game.  So we remain 2-0 and in control of our fate on our side of the Big Ten bracket.  I know, if we play like we did last week, that point is moot going forward.

But I really don’t think we will have a game quite like that - that is, such a complete meltdown from all sides - offense, defense, special teams, at any point left this season.  The Hawks know that they could lose all the rest of the games, and because they do, I think they will play better and with more urgency.

Let’s start with the offense.  He didn’t start, and it was obvious that Weisman was not 100% from his first carry.  He was not hitting the holes with his usual gusto, and then the first hit would bring him down.  He would only have 5 carries, 9 total yards - so never the chance to wear down the opposition.   Garmon, who got the start, 8 for 27 - just a plane bad day for the Hawks on the ground.

Week 7 Recap: Michigan State

Well friends, the Iowa Football team has certainly shown a flair for the dramatic in this first half of the season!  But down the stretch, they made the plays they had to make, and it was the difference in the end.  A great road win for a team that is going to need more of those if we are going to make things interesting come late November.

As Hawkeye fans began wrapping things up Friday night, we had word that the weather in East Lansing was going to be a bit less than ideal.  Then again, maybe perfect for old school Big Ten fans.

That was, rain, for pretty much the entire day, and the prospects of heavy rain along with t-storms.  Nothing to phase Iowa kids, but a football team, maybe.

1, all young receivers learn you catch the ball with your hands, and not your body.  But when the ball is wet, you tend to try and pull it into your body to make the catch.  And often, do not.  This factor would both hurt and help the Hawks on this day.

2, tailbacks, receivers, QBs, being able to hold onto wet, slippery footballs.  This did not seem to be much of a factor, probably due to modern sticky football gloves.

This would of course, also impact the Spartans equally.  So the general consensus would be lower points that many of us had predicted.

But not the end result, as your scribe had predicted.  Just had a feeling about this one.

Week 5 Recap: Minnesota

Well Hawkeye friends, that was a lot better, wasn’t it?  Floyd is back where he belongs, and the Hawks were able to go from the win into the bye week.  When we emerge, we will have injured players back,  an extra week of Spartan scouting, and a plan to move to 2-0 in the BIg Ten.  More about that, later.

The Deuce leads off telling us that the Rodents are on the rise and the Hawks are not.  The first shot - wait for it - no, it’s not a cornfield! It’s some Iowa trees in pretty fall colors.

It’s game #200 for Ferentz, as the Rodent kicker lines up to boot the ball to the Hawks.  It comes down at the midpoint of the end zone, where Cotton makes the catch and takes a knee.

Everywhere, Hawkeye fans are hoping for the quick start.

Week 4 Recap: Central Michigan

Well friends, that certainly felt like one of the worst losses of recent Iowa memory, both immediately after, and now a few days out.  The Iowa boards are full of posts saying the team is lost, mentally out of it, the coach needs to go, etc, etc.  I’m not ready to consent on any of those points, I will hold out to see how the team progresses through the rest of the season.  It’s a new slate - 0-0 in Big Ten play.  If the Hawks can’t perform at their best for 60 minutes in this one, we may have things to worry about.

It was a bad time for the Iowa defense to have their worst 2+ minutes of the season, to be sure.  But how we got there was a team effort.  Offense, defense, coaches, and officials.

Yes, this was the worst officiated Iowa football game since the 2nd bowl game against the Gators.  And little wonder - instead of having a full officials crew is as the norm, it was split up by officials from 3 different conferences.  Why this was - I have no idea.  In the end, some of them simply didn’t get big time college football.

But we knew none of this as the cameras settled into Kinnick to focus on the head coaches.  Temp in Iowa City at kickoff - 50 degrees, with winds up to 21 mph.  Besides the obvious chill, the weather would play a major factor in the end.

Week 3 Recap: Northern Iowa

Hello again, Hawkeye fans.  Hard to believe, but at about 3:15 this Saturday, the football season is one third over.  But as the Iowa game came to an end this past Saturday, we sat 50 days out from the return of Iowa Basketball.  And someday soon, we may have both Iowa Football and Basketball competing for B1G titles in the same school year.  Your scribe remembers when the Hawkeyes have done this in the past.  It makes for a one heck of a school year - be you in school, or an alumni.

It was another beautiful day in Kinnick as the Big Ten Network lead with video from, you guessed it, 2009.  This would not be as close as 09 - and we shall see if the Hawks take off from this game for a magical run as they did three seasons ago.

Another week, another old Hawkeye in the booth.  Danan Hughes, former Hawkeye wideout and baseball star, and contemporary of your scribe in Iowa City.  Me, a freshmen the fall of 1989, Danan’s redshirt freshmen season.  For his career, 146 catches, 2,216 yards, and 21 tds.  Hawkeye fans wonder if he spoke to the team about holding onto the ball.

Week 2 Recap: Iowa State

All right Hawk fans, let’s start with the good news - the defense is playing better than many thought it would.  Usually.  The Clones looked like they were going to bury us for much of the 1st half, but that old Hawkeye Bend Don’t Break defense only allowed 9 points.  I think if anyone had told us ISU would have 9 points at halftime, we would have been ok with that.

But 9 points at the end - and the offense couldn’t muster even that - well, things have to improve in a hurry.  For the record - the last time the Hawks lost a game in which the defense allowed single digits - October 4th, 1980, in Kinnick, to Arizona.  The score - Wildcats 5, Hawkeyes 3.

Week 1 Recap: Northern Illinois

It was an overcast sky as the Hawks and Huskies took the field, as the remnants of Hurricane Isaac loomed to bring rain and possibly t-storms through the heart of Big Ten football.  But the players really only had to deal what was below them, not above, as Soldier has a long history of having the worst surface in the NFL.

The Huskies won the toss and deferred, and of course, the Hawkeyes took the ball.  In Soldier, and all over the country, Hawk fans wondered what changes we would see.  And rejoiced at the return of college football, as the kick settled down into the arms of Greg Garmen, who knelt down in the end zone, and the game was on.
