The Eternal Season - Tuesday November 29th

Hello again TES Friends!

The Eternal Season keeps right on rolling along - just hours now from December, the Holidays are here, and despite the record high in NYC yesterday, the Earth keeps getting a bit further from the sun, and the result - winter.

But for now, we are enjoying the 65 degree temps - and though cloudy, even the rain has stepped away for a bit.

So, what has been going on out there since the Hawks sleepwalked their way through the Nebraska game?  A lot.

Let's start with the in-season sports - like hoops.  The NBA is back, not that many folks seemed to notice it was gone.  Word broke over the weekend of yet another off-the-field scandal, this time at Syracuse, where Associate Basketball Coach Bernie Fine was fired Sunday amidst allegations that he has engaged in sexual abuse of children over many years - and like at Penn State, there was evidence several years ago of this, but at best it was mishandled,  worst, swept under the rug.  So far, it has not cost Jim Boeheim his job - but it sure appears tenuous.

Onto teams we care about, the Hawks play tonight against Clemson in the Big Ten/ACC Shootout - the game is in Iowa City, on ESPNU, at 9:15 eastern.  This will be the first live Hawkeye game that TES has gotten to see this season - really looking forward to it.  Go Hawks!

Now, the ice.  Awoke Monday to the shocking news that the Caps had canned coach Bruce Boudreau, the fastest coach to 200 wins in the modern NHL, and replaced him with former Capital Dale Hunter.  Evidence that Boudreau was losing the team was confirmed with back to back bad losses, so the Caps made the move now.  Hunter, who has himself enjoyed record setting success as coach of the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, played 11+ seasons with the Caps, and is one of only 4 players whose number hangs in the rafters of the Phone Booth.  Aside from the shock of the dismissal, most of the fans on the Caps boards seem thrilled to have the old captain back - now behind the bench.  The Hunter era starts tonight, against the Blues.  Can't see that one, but then on Thursday, Cindy and the Pens come calling, and that game will be on the NHL Network, at 7:00 pm Eastern.  There will be some changes to be sure, but maybe a change was needed to get this team to the promised land.  Go Caps!!!

And then, football.  The Hawks await word on their bowl destination, but signs are beginning to align to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, in Houston, against Texas A&M.  That game is Saturday, December 31st, at noon.  A&M brings in a rather high flying offense - but Hawk fans will remember what Norm can do to explosive offenses when he has a month to prepare.  Things should all fall into place over the weekend, as the title games determine the BCS bids, and all the other bowls move from there.

Oh yes, there was also a press conference yesterday confirming something we knew for a  week -  Urban Meyer is the new head coach at Ohio State.  Fans of teams in the B1G Leaders division - nervous.  OSU may have taken some shots this year - but most expect Meyer to have them back in short order.

In the NFL, the Giants 3 game slide - more like free fall, after the pounding they took on MNF, leaves guess who, the Cowboys, alone in 1st in the NFC East!  The stretch run is nearly here, and per usual, a full slate of NFC East matchups will highlight the last month of the season.

That's going to do it for Tuesday here at TES, got a few errands and such on the day off.  Now that the football season has ended, we'll be back with our more regular updates, as The Eternal Season rolls on into 2012.  Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday, and remember, tomorrow is Hump Day!
