The Eternal Season - Saturday July 23

Good Morning Sports Fans! Welcome to the weekend!

The steamy, energy zapping sauna that is.  Another day at or above 100 here in Gotham. Making one kind of wish for a crisp fall Saturday with leaves changing all around.  At noon today, we are 7 weeks away to the start of Iowa Football.  So we lead with another Hawkeye freshman, a defensive end and fullback, John Raymon.

And maybe, just maybe, this weekend will also include the official return of the NFL.  By now you have heard that the owners have voted for an and accepted the CBA - and proceeded to piss off the players by having a press conference Thursday night as if everything was all said and done.  Problem was, the players hadn't seen the details, still have to reform their union, and have their lawyers go through things line by line.  Word today that the NFLPA is meeting this weekend to try and get the process completed - so the players could possibly vote today, tomorrow, or Monday.  The Hall of Fame Game has already been canceled, and if things are not settled on by Wednesday, the first preseason games could be in jeopardy.  But we know that NFL football will return one week after the college boys open up the 2011 season on September 1st.

The Dodger drama continues, though perhaps we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Yesterday the bankruptcy judge rejected the financing that the owners had arranged with a hedge fund, leaving that in the hands of MLB.  MLB, of course, does not want to be in the business of paying for and running teams.  None of this helps the managers and players, who must now really start to wonder if the team is going to be dismantled a la the Marlins, in order to slash payroll.  8 days until the trade deadline.

In other Dodger news, the LAPD has arrested 3 other people in the beating of the Giants fan (and cleared the guy they arrested originally).  Hopefully this is resolved soon, so that the guilty are locked up for a very long time.

The MLB first star for Friday goes to Nelson Cruz, of the Rangers.  4 for 4 with 8 rbis in their 12-2 win over Toronto.  More pitching dominance again, as those Jays, the Dodgers, Padres and Orioles all had just 3 hits in their losses.  It's been a little while now, perhaps a no-hitter this weekend?

Soccer reminder, the Copa America 3rd place game is at 3:00 pm today, and the final is at 3:00 pm Sunday.  There are also a whole bunch of World Cup qualifiers and league games today, if you have the complete soccer package on your tv, a game watching feast.

One last bit for Hawkeye fans, you can find the 2010 Iowa - Michigan game replay on the BTN at 3:00 eastern today.

All right TES friends, if we have got to be hot, might as well be out in the sun, tossing around a football or Frisbee in the park.  Hope that your weekend allows for a bit of fun as well!
