TES - 5/7/11

Greetings, Sports Fans!

The weekend started with very sad news from across the pond.  Five time major champion Seve Ballesteros, 'The Matador', died Friday night, due to complications from a brain tumor.  Seve has been the inspiration for many of the top European golfers who are ranked near the top of the PGA Tour at this time.  He was also a key player when the Europeans were finally able to wrest the Ryder Cup away from the Americans, and continue to hold it as they have over the past few competitions.  The Matador was just 54 years old.  Below is a youtube video showing many of his greatest shots and wins.

Back on this side of the Atlantic, it was a busy night all across the nation's fields and arenas.  There would be no rally from the Flyers this time, as the Bruins pasted Philly 5-1, to complete the sweep and set up the Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay.  That's setting up to be a great series, but more about that when it gets closer.  In the west, Detroit was able to finally get a win, but now must head back to the Shark Tank for game 5 trailing 3-1.  That game is Sunday night.  Tonight, Vancouver looks to take out Nashville in game 5 at Rogers Arena, 8:00 pm on Versus.

On the hardwood, Dirk was able to out duel Kobe down the stretch, as the Mavericks took the 3-0 lead on the Lakers 98-92.  Afterwords, Bryant stepped up and said that LA was going to win this series.  That would be an NBA first - a rally done only once in baseball, and only three times in hockey.  In other words, don't bet on it.  In Chicago, Rose blew up for 44 as the Bulls took a 2-1 lead on the Hawks.  Tonight at 5:00, the Thunder travel to Memphis to face the Grizzlies with the series tied at 1 all, then at 8:00, the Heat look to go up 3-0 on the Celtics.

A nearly full slate of baseball today, the biggest news from Friday was Philly's Cliff Lee striking out 16 Braves, let losing 5-0 as Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the 7th, and the Atlanta bullpen finished the job with a 2 hitter.  While that was going on, Cardinal pitcher Jamie Gracia took a perfect game into the 8th, only to lose it and settle on a complete game 2 hitter.  Scoring is down all over baseball - guess the steroid era must be over!  The Payroll Issue series continues from Citi Field, with the Dodgers Andre Ethier looking to push his hitting streak to 31 games - that would equal the all-time Dodger record.

We are now about 3 hours from Derby post time, and the shocker from Friday was that the favorite, Uncle Mo, has been scratched due to a stomach ailment.  Stress?  With him out, the field of 19 is pretty wide open.  NBC's coverage kicks in at 4:00 pm.

The fight line for tonight is 8-1 in favor of Manny.  I said yesterday I'm taking Mosley.  No, I'm not putting any money on this one.

That bout wraps things up for Saturday, I hope you are able to take some time away from weekend chores and relax in front of the tube for a while.  Now your listings.
