Good Afternoon Sports Fans,
A bit slow on the fields and courts/ice last night, with one hockey game, no hoops games, and MLB's Get Away Day meant lots of day games. On the ice, the Nashville Predators made a game of it, but fell 4-2 to drop behind Vancouver 3-1, with game 5 at the Canucks barn Saturday night. This was the Preds first time out of the 1st round...and their run appears to end here.
Though there wasn't any action on the court, there was certainly hoops news last night. First, long time Maryland coach Gary Williams announced that he is retiring - there is a presser today at 1:00 pm, you can probably see it on ESPN News.
The two-zip hole the Lakers find themselves in (losing two home games) got a little bit deeper when (surprise) Ron Artest was suspended one game for a double technical. That game 3, tonight in Dallas, 9:30 eastern, ESPN. No NBA team has ever won a series they trailed 3-0.
Back to the ice, the Bruins look to sweep away the Flyers at 8:00 eastern. Yes, the same Flyers who pulled the 0-3 comeback last season - against Boston. But with the goalie carousel going on in Philly, don't look for that to happen again. At 7:00, the Sharks will also try to sweep the Red Wings out of round 2 - that game, in Detroit. Both games are on Versus, and your local regional sports network.
A full slate of baseball today, but being the travel day, the only day game is Reds @ Cubs. Here in New York, we get the match-up of teams that can't make payroll without help - Dodgers at Mets.
As far as those 'other sports' go, this weekend kicks off the major horse racing season, with the
Kentucky Derby (4:00 eastern, NBC, but coverage of the other races starts at 11:00 am on Versus). Need to get some fresh mint!
And then - one of the bigger fights in some time. Manny Pacquiao v. 'Sugar' Shane Mosley. The undercard starts at 9:00 pm on Saturday, pay per view of course. Get thyself to a sports bar. I'm going with Sugar in a TKO.
But those are both tomorrow, a sports fan has got games to watch today! Here are your listings, hope your day goes well!
