Well now that I have had to time to think about it, this game had to rank as one of the most satisfying Hawkeye wins we have seen in a while.  Sure, not the thrilling excitement of the Penn State game, or Iowa/LSU, etc, but extremely gratifying nonetheless.

The 55-0 beat down was the 2nd worst loss the Gophers have ever endured, and in fact the single worst to a Big Ten opponent.  That closed the 27-year history of the Metrodome with an Iowa record of 8 up and 6 down.  Forever enshrining it as Kinnick North/Indoor.

The wait – was excruciating.

Seems neither side is willing to admit to screwing something up, but I should have known there might be a problem.  I have DirecTV at home, and normally the Big Ten Network games all show up early Friday on the alternate channels (until then, they say ‘Teams TBD’), but when I tired to set up my dvr to record the game Friday night, none of the game were showing up yet.  Same problem before I left for the bar Saturday morning, and I found it especially strange the guide was not even listing the Penn State game on the main Big Ten channel.

The weight – is over.

The weight, that is, of our depressing streak of 9 straight losses in games decided by 3 points or less.  And the three season long wait that we have endured, hoping the Hawks could get a signature win that would propel us back toward our place at the top of the Big Ten and the Top 10 in the polls.

If this win will indeed do that is to be seen, but I like our chances.  That the Hawks could play a considerably less than perfect game yet come out with the victory could mean that we have finally turned that corner.

Well – the Hawks sure do know how to make things interesting, and then break our heart.  They are all bad, but this loss was critical.  If we were 3-2 instead of 2-3 we would be only one loss back of both the Buckeyes and Spartans in the Big Ten hunt.  Instead we sit in 7th place; bowl seeding wise, and things are not getting any easier this week.

Last Week: Maine

Thanks to everyone who turned out Saturday and kicked the season off to great start!  Yes – we are working on getting some functioning audio set up for week 2 so we can hear the Fight and Beer songs in all their glory.  If you were to touch that cd player, you would understand.  To say it’s crusty is an understatement.

So we beat Maine by 43 points.  As noted last week, pretty hard to tell a whole lot from such a contest, but at least our margin of victory was in line with most of the top schools who were playing non-BCS, or Div. 2 squads.  Well, except for VA Tech.  And the @ Pitt game looks much less frightening this week – if you saw the ‘highlights’, it’s not that they just lost to Bowling Green, Pitt just plain looked bad.  And I knew Michigan was going to lose to Utah.  Oh, how I wish we played them this year!

To kick things off, we have exciting news for the Hawkeye family!  You remember our good friends Jerred and Michele Cook?  They gave up Gotham for the more family friendly Twin Cities.  And for good reason.  Last night (Wednesday), Benjamin Edward Cook joined theirs, and the wider Hawkeye, family.  Ben arrived at 10:36 pm, and checked in at 8 lbs, 14 oz, and a healthy 20 inches long.  Just in time to catch his first Iowa/Iowa State football game.  And Ben, September birthdays are the best! Pics of the little Hawkeye are here:

(A note for you Twin Cities Hawkeyes – Jerred is a tad bit busy at the moment, so you are getting the game notes right from the source this week.  Your game watch is at your usual locations: http://www.iowalum.com/TwinCities/index.html )

Great news to help us on this somber day in the City. That’s it for announcements, now onto the Notes!

Ok my friends, Here We Go…

Hello again, New York City Hawkeyes!  And greetings to Hawkeye friends in Iowa City, the Second City, the Twin Cities, and anywhere else on the information superhighway your inbox is parked.  Welcome to the 2008 edition of the ‘Gotham Hawkeyes Game Notes’ (new year, new title).  My occasionally wandering, often inaccurate (lately), but always optimistic look at Iowa Football.  Come the cooler months, Hawkeye Hoops as well.  A weekly visit to your desktop that we hope will not end until very, very late in March.

Waiting from New Year’s Day to Labor Day for football to start is bad enough.  Tack on the extra 6 plus weeks due to last year’s flame out, and the wait is been nearly unbearable.  I even found myself sitting patiently through synchronized diving while waiting for Phelps to continue his quest for Olympic immortality. And did you know the top badminton players can hit the shuttlecock at nearly 200 mph?  Mercifully, the sports wanderlust has come to an end.  By the time you read this, there will be football in just hours.  That is, Thursday night.  Friday night (cheer for Army, I will be there). A full slate of games on Saturday, from noon to 10 pm eastern. Games on Sunday, and games on Labor Day.  If you do things right, you should be able to watch at least 11 college football games in 5 days!

TES - 100 Days Til Iowa Football - 2008 Edition

Hello again Hawkeye friends, both near and far!

At 12:00 noon Thursday, we are 100 days from our favorite time of the year.

Well, it sure has been miserable waiting ever since November 17th for this day to come.  For us, watching the bowl season sans Hawkeyes was no fun, for the players, they lost out on two extra weeks of NCAA sanctioned practice. Then we had to suffer through a hoops rebuild, a quick exit for the Hawkeye women from the March Madness, and another win for the Clones in the Cy-Hawk series.  Fortunately, the year was not a total loss, as Iowa Wrestling has restored the proper order of the universe.

The 2007 football season had its ups and downs, and the most frustrating part about the season ending loss was the appearance that the team had thought (as did we) that they had turned a corner in the back half of the Big Ten season, and frankly, flat out blew off Western Michigan because of it. Of course, those wins did indicate that things were getting better, so the hope is that this loss was a lot more about the mental condition of the team than their skill level or their execution.  As I think it was, I believe that there is optimism as we head into the 2008 season.

Once again, no Buckeyes or Wolverines, and the Badgers, Lions, Clowns, Wildcats, and Boilermakers must all visit Kinnick.  There are several, and some critical, holes to be filled, to be sure, but Iowa seems like it could be prepared in many cases to do so.
