Last Week: Minnesota
Well the Hawks sure are doing a good job of keeping us from getting too bored during the games!  For the 3rd week in a row they play well for 30 minutes and disappear (the offense) for the other half.  Flipped the script this time of course, and started strong and faded after halftime.  Still, you can find some upside in the fact we did get two first quarter tds, and then came right back after they got theirs to put them down by 14 again, and figure that one of these weeks we can do that on both sides of halftime.  Maybe even in 2007.

Last Week: Northwestern
Well once again the Hawks sleepwalked their way through quarter one (three 3 and outs, netting 12 yards.  But that’s 13 more yards than they got in Q1 last week!).  Meanwhile the defense was getting torched for 196 yards.  Offense did the same for much of Q2, finally waking up at the 2:10 mark after the defense stuffed the Wildcats on a 3 and out from the Northwestern 3 yard line.  The resulting punt gave the Hawks the ball at the 40 and Jake woke up, drove them down the field, and hit Stross for a 20 yard touchdown.  52 air yards on the drive and the Hawks found themselves down by just 7.  That we were not down by much more was quite surprising, they way things looked in the 1st.

Last Week: Michigan State
All season, we have watched and waited, begged and pleaded, for someone on the offense to make a play that would spark the team and pop the cork that has been keeping our offense bottled up all year.

It took 30 dismal minutes but at halftime, a senior rose up in the locker room and told the team that the Hawks would run the ball and that would get them back into the game.

Last Week: Purdue
It appears that indeed, it is a rebuilding season, and that’s too bad, as it sure would be nice to have a fluid offense to pair with our seasoned defense.  Once again, this loss was not the fault of the guys on that side of the line, but they did not have their best day either.

The stats are scary so I’ll be brief.  3-16 third down conversions.  18%.  Abysmal.  Jake 17-40, 177 yards.  Early on the receivers were giving him no help, dropping passes left and right.  It must have rattled him because for the rest of the game he was short, long, high and low way too often.  Guess when guys can’t hold onto passes that hit them in the hands a QB tends to ‘aim’ the ball as opposed to ‘throwing’ it and that’s what you get.  To make things worse Ferentz could not exactly bench anybody for dropping passes – due to late in the week injuries the Hawks only had 3 true wide receivers make the trip.  Young averaged a very good 6 yards plus on his 7 carriers but only played in bout half the game after he banged his knee up.  With him out the Hawks could only tack 77 rushing yards onto the passing total.  Given the ball inside the 50 four different times by the defense, the offense could only muster 6 points.

Last Week: Illinois
With a little execution, some luck, and a healthy does of Zook coaching, the Beer Song did indeed appear, and I even caught a fair number of Wildcat fans singing right along!

First, the defense.  Illinois came in averaging 30 points per and could just manage 2 field goals.  Humpal is your Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his 18 tackle, 2.5 tackles for a loss, and recovered fumble effort (and now FWAA National Defensive Player of the Week as well).  The Illini rushed for 137 yards but that was about half what they had been getting so far this year.  Juice could only pass for 98 yards and rush for 41, and in one of the Zook mind benders, benched him after his early 4th quarter fumble.  Yup, the Hawks (Shada) got lucky on that long td bomb – I believe it was the same tight end call that took the td to Chandler off the board in the Texas game. Yet it was a penalty and the Hawk defense has now completed four games without giving up a td.

All right, I guess the Hawks have now hit rock bottom, and there are two choices.  Dwell there for a while and become the team everyone in the Big Ten can’t wait to play, or figure out some way to move the football and start climbing back up that ladder.

It turns out the vision we had of offensive line greatness after games 1 and 2 was simply overstated.  It has not helped that we have not been able to really get the 5 guys on the field who were supposed to start the season (Richardson still can’t get passed his bad knee), and in fact the Hawks had to shift guys around at the last minute Saturday.  Our 48 total yards rushing is testament to that.

So – some of you peeps at the bar challenged me to find something positive to write about this game.  And so I present – through two Big Ten games the Hawks have not allowed a single punt return yard.  HA! You all owe me a drink.

Alas, that was pretty much it.  Especially concerning the ‘special’ teams, who not only did not kick in some points as I had wanted, but in fact gave 7 of them back (negative points?) with the two missed field goals (one by each kicker) and the botched extra point (by Signor).  A lost fumble on a punt return, too.  Certainly did not make things any easier for the offense or defense, which had problems of their own to overcome.

Last Week: Wisconsin
All right my friends. As tough a loss as that was, at least we saw things to make us think better days are ahead for Iowa football. Yeah, we love shoot outs, but for us old timers it was nice to see a good old fashioned, war of attrition, Big Ten football game.

And what a battle it was.  30 first downs, with 18 punts.  10 of those punts were ours, and in a sign that maybe the punt team is channeling last year’s, the Badgers could only manage -2 yards returning one of them.  An up and down day for the special teams as a unit – DJK nearly returned (just one man he could not beat) the kickoff after Wisconsin took the 14-10 lead, Murray hitting two pressure packed field goals in his first college start, but again, another blocked field goal that played a major part in the outcome.  As things are not going as we would like on the offensive side of the ball we have to have zero gaffs in the special teams.  Or more precisely – they need to kick in some points.  And I don’t mean field goals.

So much for the Hawks focusing entirely on the game at hand!  At least some of the Hawkeyes.  The defense probably figured that if the Clones could just manage 5 field goals we would win by, oh, 16 or so.  Right on the line, 17 points.  Then again, the defense could have helped a bit by sacking Meyer at least once.  Or pressuring him into mistakes, or bad throws.  Instead he had all the time he needed (well, not much time was needed, but you know what I mean) to toss those little 7 yard passes to keep the drives alive and into field goal range.   There the Hawk defense stood up and has yet to allow a touchdown in 2007 – the only team in Division 1 that can say so.

What can one say about a team that would be relegated to 1AA – or lower – if we did such a thing in American sports?  But they must be saluted for playing hard and not phoning it in, and you did have to feel sorry for the coaches and players on that sideline when this game got out of hand.  A little.  It’s hard to find anything in this game to make me think they are going to have any success in the resurrected Big East, but at least they get to play Buffalo (in their dome) so one win should be within reach.

1 train to 79th street, then half a block east.  Several parking garages are nearby.
NOTE: If sitting on bar stools/standing for 3 hours is not ideal for you, we will be reserving a couple tables on the restaurant side of Blondies.  Call the bar at 212 362-4360 to reserve table space.  We will not always have Hawkeye audio on the restaurant side, however.

Last Week: Northern Illinois

All right – there was some griping in the bar that the final score was not a bit more rout-ish, but I was not too concerned with that.  The Hawks could have opened things up a bit more in the 4th quarter but it was nice to see them just grind out the clock on those last few drives.  Somewhere down the road the Hawks will get the ball back with a 3 point or less lead and 5 minutes left, and it will be up to the 0-line and tailbacks to bleed that clock down to zero.  The good news was that for the first game, things looked all right.  Sure, there are things to work on – but things are not going to get any harder this coming Saturday.

Last Week: Alamo Bowl
The Hawkeyes awakened from their regular season slumber and should have won the game. Maybe the fact they didn’t is adding fuel to the pre-season camp going on now.  If the Hawks can play this year like they did in that one game, 07 will be just fine.

TES - 100 Days Til Iowa Football - 2007 Edition

Greetings NYC Hawks!

(And assorted other Hawkeye friends in places like Chi-Town and that town filled with Golden Rodents.)

My how time does fly.  We find ourselves again just 100 short days of our favorite time of the year.  Yes, last year it was tough to be a Hawkeye fan, but with each new school year hope springs eternal. And it’s true – Buckeyes and Wolverines are nowhere to be found on the schedule. Not in 2008, either.  The Hawks have some holes to fill but the schedule won’t be any easier than this year and next for many years to come.

Of course, all discussion beings with the end of the Drew Tate era and the beginning of the Jake Christensen years. He has had a leg up on the starter’s job since he is a red-shirt sophomore and has started a game.  But Jake is a true drop back (southpaw) QB – and the two red-shirt freshmen behind him on the depth chart (Nelson and Stanzi) are more of the mobile running type quarterbacks.   The Hawks must replace 3 starters on the offensive line, so it’s conceivable the running QBs might see some early action if the protection is not what we need to start. Then again, 0-line is what the Hawks do best (all 3 seniors gone, now in NFL camps) so I would not worry too much that the guys that step in will look very lost on the field.
